Too Much

There seems to be an avalanche right now, a never-ending tide.
I wonder whether it’s only social media, an unhealthy awareness of a reality we’re not used to seeing every day. A desire for attention that ignites fire and fury. A fundamental emptiness. Are our eyes too wide open right now?

AI generated images/videos and music are thievery: taking what wasn't given.

We must reflect and practice restrain, do not consume them, and much less, spread them. We all should know this by now

Especially heartbreaking is to see monastics, Buddhist pages and YouTube channels, senior practitioners using them

2nd precept: undertake the training rule to abstain from taking what is not given

Kiyomizu-dera—one of the Buddhist temples we visited in Japan (one of my favorites).

A landscape view of Kiyomizu-dera, a Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan.

The temple and pagoda are visible in the background, surrounded by trees, many of which are transitioning into vibrant autumn colors. One tree on the left, in particular, is nearing peak red foliage. The whole area is very centered toward nature, encouraging visitors and worshippers to find calmness within themselves while appreciating both the history and beauty of the place.

The 3-story pagoda is orange and gold, while the temple is a more natural brown and gold. sad constructed using wooden pillars over a mountainside. Both are stunning.

Went with my wife and our friend from Tokyo to Katsuo-ji (勝尾寺), a very unusual Japanese temple. Its main theme is shown by the many figures of Daruma (達磨大師; Sanskrit: Bodhidharma), who transmitted meditation Buddhism from India to China. This temple in the mountains north of Osaka City especially appeals to Chinese tourists with its bright red colors and the good luck associated with Daruma rituals. Daruma is usually associated with Zen, but the temple is Shingon, the Esoteric Buddhism of Kūkai. Thus, there is a Shintō shrine in the Buddhist temple, and a unique mini-Pilgrimage of 88 temples on the island of Shikoku. There is a statue representing each of the 88, plus a step under each one so that we pilgrims can symbolically set foot on each temple.

Currently a "Research Spotlight" article, related to the above history, see "Translation Issues in the Rapid Transmission of Esoteric Buddhism from India to China to Japan" at researchgate.net/publication/3

Hi, I'm Evan (he/any).

TLDR: I'm a privileged white hetero-cis-male politically #left #TriratnaBuddhist #SoftwareEngineer (#IHelpPeopleGetJobs) currently in #Seattle but planning to move to #AotearoaNZ or #Australia as so as we can manage it with my wife & 3 kids

I'm politically #left (at least in United States terms). I'm a #voting nerd in that I have a favorite voting-related textbook (Collective Decisions and Voting by Nicolaus Tideman).

I think we could mostly solve #gerrymandering by making larger districts with ~5 representatives instead of just 1 and then using #SingleTransferableVote. That would strike a nice balance between local & proportional representation. For single-person positions, like presidents/governors/mayors, STV becomes #RankedChoiceVoting (aka #InstantRunoffVoting aka #AlternativeVote) which eliminates the spoiler effect and leads to more civil campaigns.

Plus, #RankedChoiceVoting eliminates the need for primaries and runoffs, which can lead to significant cost reductions.

I'm training for ordination with the #TriratnaBuddhist Order (#dhamma, #dharma, #Buddhism) and have been for many years. It's a long process, especially with other things going on. I've done some kind of #meditation (mostly #anapanasati) every day for over 3 years and more sporadically since 2006.

That said, I do take issue with some of the things the founder (Sangharakshita) did, and I'm concerned with a recent rise in sort of guru worship around. I can have gratitude for his explanation of the dharma, try to sort out the idiosyncratic bits, and still view him as a deeply flawed human being.

I write #software for http://indeed.com (job search site) (previously employed by Amazon). I've written a lot of #database-backed #webservices in #Java, but in the last few years, I've been working on #microfrontend platforms in #JavaScript & #TypeScript, primarily supporting #React. I have more knowledge about #Webpack #ModuleFederation than anyone should be cursed with. I'd love to try #SolidJS, #RustLang seems really cool, and I'm excited about the future of #WebAssembly.

My wife & I have fantasized about moving to #AotearoaNZ or #Australia since well before the pandemic, and now we're actively trying make it happen. Since we're both in high-demand professions (she's a nurse), I think it should go reasonably smoothly 🤞. Feel free to get in touch with job opportunities that offer visa sponsorship, suggestions for #kiwiana or Australian culture that will help us adapt, reasons that your city is the best, etc. I always blow on the pie when I wear my jandals to the dairy. If we ship things over, I can only hope that the front doesn't fall off the boat. I hear that only rarely happens.

My daughter Juniper was born at the beginning of 2020, so her experience of life and my experience of parenthood are both tightly linked to the pandemic. On the upside, I get to work remotely, which means I get more time with her. She's a lot of fun (and of course a lot of work).

Then, we had our twins Heath & Magnolia (Noli) in September 2023, and our lives got even more hectic and full of love.

Juniper goes to a Waldorf school, and I wish I could go, too, but I think the adult version of Waldorf school might just be therapy.

From 2004-2024 I introduced Japan to visiting foreign officials for the government foreign aid agency (Japan International Cooperation Agency or JICA). From 2020, when JICA could not bring participants to Japan, my recorded presentation by Zoom was shown at their branches overseas. Now, JICA has released the 98-minute recording from exclusive government ownership. It goes broadly and deeply from the origins of Japan 30,000+ years ago to contemporary ways of thinking and social behavior.

You know, it is quite possible to work for 20 years on something and end up with nothing to show for it. Therefore, it means so much, as my legacy, to be able to share this video publicly from now on:

I can't help thinking that I've gone through a midlife crisis in the recent years.

I went in as an atheist, neurotypical, omnivore guy with no tattoos, who had no sense of what they want to do "when I grow up" and lived in an apartment building.

What came through is a Buddhist, autistic, vegan non-binary person with almost 20 tattoos and a teacher's identity, living in a detached house.

Can recommend! 💜

dreaming of being

Photo of open notebook next to two glass dip pens, one slightly sanded down with a blunt tip. The page shows a haiku written in dark black-purple ink, with abstract, layered patches of dripping purple and teal inks. At the bottom of the page is a drawing of a blade of grass with a large dewdrop hanging from its underside.

I fight for the users.

I love programming and thinking and talking about thinking. I have an education (BS, MS, PhD) focused on artificial intelligence and neuroscience.

I'm an advocate of the public academic pursuit of knowledge, the scientific process, peer review, and I see open source software and hardware as an essential part of the scientific process.

I see software user rights, including security and privacy, to be protected mainly by free open source software, specifically software with a copyleft license, i.e. GPL or Mozilla.

I see the democratizing effects of the Internet, including distributed journalism and social networking, to be largely the effect of the collaborative development of free and open source software.

I am interested in free and open source manufacturing, including open source 3D printers and CNC machines. I believe open source manufacturing will be important for distributed manufacturing, allowing local manufacturing and local labor.

I see worker-owned coops as the way to safely transition from a non-democratic authoritarian top-down power structure of a traditional corporation to a democratic work environment, where the workers own the company and elect the board of directors, transitioning to democracy in the workplace.

I believe that socialism is a regulatory response to capitalism.

I believe that laws, money, corporations, and government are social agreements, and I'm in favor of democratic social agreements.

I believe in the organized non-violent boycott as a way to control capitalists and change corrupt systems.

I am a pacifist. I am against violence. I am against citizens keeping guns in cities and towns with children. I am against war.

I try to eat plant-based / vegan foods to boycott the animal industry, to help with the climate crisis, to improve my health, to avoid animal cruelty, and to avoid the extinction of species of plants, animals and ecosystems.

I have been diagnosed with Retinitus Pigmentosa, which is a disease of progressive retinal degeneration. I am legally blind, although I have about 5-degrees of vision remaining in my fovea. I'm interested in researching and developing BCIs (Brain-Computer Interfaces), specifically BCIs that function as vision prostheses that may help with conditions like RP, or the more common degenerative retinal disease AMD (Age-related Macular Degeneration).

I enjoy playing computer games like Age of Empires and Rimworld. I used to program computer games when I was younger and would like to get back to it one day.

I love playing music, especially bass guitar. I've been listening to a lot of Rage Against the Machine and Enya recently.

I enjoy reading books, mostly non-fiction.

I enjoy studying religions. I've found a lot of value in Buddhism, and I meditate often daily.

Nina and I have recently had our first baby, a boy we call Tyoma.

I'm currently working at Brain Computer Enterprises, Cooperative Inc. on FOSH assistive consumer electronics.

I'm sober.

Mahayana Refuge:
I go for refuge until I am enlightened
to the Buddha, the Dharma and the Supreme Assembly.
Through the merit of practising generosity and so on,
May I become a Buddha for the benefit of all beings

Bodhicitta:
May all sentient beings have happiness and its causes, may all sentient beings be free of suffering and its causes, may they be inseparable from the sublime happiness which is beyond sorrow, may all sentient beings abide in equanimity, free of bias, attachment and anger.

Shantideva Prayer:
May I become at all times, both now and forever
A protector of those without protection
A guide for those who have lost their way
A ship for those with oceans to cross
A bridge for those with rivers to cross
A sanctuary for those in danger
A lamp for those without light
A place of refuge for those who lack shelter
And a servant to all in need
For as long as space endures,
And for as long as living beings remain,
Until then may I, too, abide
To dispel the misery of the world.

Biography:
I am a happily married English Buddhist, 68 years old, living these past 38 years in Slovenia. I was raised a Catholic and attended a Jesuit school but lost my faith in God when I was 15. After graduating in Industrial Engineering I traveled overland along the old hippie trail to India in search of answers to the pain I felt in the world. I encountered Buddhism in Dharamsala, home-in-exile of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Back in London I joined Sogyal Rinpoche's Rigpa group in 1981 and started practicing the Dharma.

I have been a production assistant in London, bartender in Hong Kong, English teacher in South Korea, planning engineer in London and Fife, Scotland, and a development engineer, planner, import-export agent and translator in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Besides being interested in living mindfully and preserving the Buddha Dharma, I am also an advocate of democracy, peace, non-violence, human and animal rights, a free Tibet, a democratic Burma, the right of Palestinians to a homeland, the prevention of human trafficking, gender equality, LGBTQI rights worldwide, veganism, the abolition of capital punishment, amnesty to prisoners of conscience, etc. I am also interested in supporting poverty alleviation and humanitarian work of any kind as well as sustainable development, education, protection of the environment and mental health and other health issues.

My Dharma practice comprises keeping the five precepts (mind trainings) for a lay Buddhist and practicing the six perfections (far-reaching practices) of Mahayana Buddhism - generosity, ethical conduct, forbearance, perseverance, concentration and, wisdom - as an aspiring Bodhisattva. I also like to consider myself a "socially engaged Buddhist" with my principle outlet being a keyboard campaigner for human, animal and environmental causes on social media and a vegan/animal rights activist locally.

As a part of keeping the five precepts, I practice veganism to the best of my ability and to the forefront of my practice I try to generate beginner's mind (don't know mind) as well as loving kindness and compassion both towards self and others.

Besides my favourite practice tonglen, my meditation these days is primarily of the analytical kind but always includes understanding that firstly, everyone wants to be be happy and avoid suffering and secondly, everyone has shown kindness to me in this life and past lives.

Politically I support The Green Party of England and Wales, the European Greens, American Democratic Socialists and the Levica (Left) Party in Slovenia

I am a vegan and don't smoke, drink alcohol or do drugs.

With my Slovene wife, Mojca, we have a son, Tom, now aged 37.

A young monastic and their teacher were preparing the midday meal when the teacher noticed a tiny insect on the cutting board.
"Look," she said, "how small this creature is, you can barely see it with your naked eye. Do you still think it is sentient?"
"Yes teacher," they replied, "all creatures are sentient."
"Bravo!" the teacher said, as she smashed it between her fingers.

7. Remember the law of Kharma and be virtuous.
8. Remember time is passing; what good have you done? How have you improved today?
9. Make time to meditate and abide in peace and quiet.
10. How well have you meditated? Where? How can your meditation improve?

An overdue 👋 (thanks for the prompt when I switched instances @aussocialadmin )

My name is Scott and I live in Sydney (on Wangal Country in the Inner West). My pronouns are he / him.

I was born and raised in Canada (Alberta, even), and have lived in some great places around the world (Montreal, NYC, Vermont, rural Kenya). Being a Canadian man of a certain age, yes, I play hockey. Even in Australia.

I've been very (not extremely) online since the 90s. First it was rec.music.phish, then fark.com, then the Big Tech Socials.

I strive to behave with compassion and to be more kind than nice. But I also shitpost from time to time because internet.

I'm interested in lots of things and barely maintain a blurred boundary between personal and professional. See hashtags below or on my profile for a more specific list, but I think it's generally encompassed by the concept of which I understand as being coined by Thich Nhat Hanh and drawn from Vietnamese and older Buddhist concepts.

Hashtags ftw:
