Developer friends. I’m installing Linux on my old MacBook. What editor do you recommend?

I’m going to port my macOS accessibility app, Ratio, to Linux. I want to get it right, so I’m gonna build it there instead of on my MacBook.

Edit: I currently use Nova. I’m also a designer so I love a pretty GUI. But I’m very comfortable with CLI.

I urge all developers of apps to NOT pre-emptively obey the new terms of requiring you to sign up for the Android Developer Console.

It looks like Google is attempting a power grab and wants to prevent ALL installations of Android apps without official Google approval; even those installed outside Google Play.

This is an attack on both developer and user freedom and unacceptable.

Software development stereotypes:

  1. Silicon valley / startup: all things web/mobile, debuggers suck, make solutions for problems that don’t exists…
  2. European / 90s/2000s / gamedev: coding != programming, debuggers are lifeline, game development is fun when they are not forced upon by some multi million dollar publisher.
  3. Corporate / enterprise: programs are mere tools and development is just another corporate job.
  4. Open source / FSF: whatever you make just keep the source open and redistributable.

Feel free to make changes or add more stereotypes.

A "shareware" application is a trial which can be used at no cost, but only for a limited time or with other limitations until the user purchases a full copy. "Freeware" applications extend the concept by completely removing the time limit and by (sometimes) having no usage limitations.

Both kind of products are closed source, non-free and non-libre.

I guess maybe it's time I update my intro, given that A LOT changed since 2023 (and many new people are coming to the fediverse after the latest changes into the social network space)...

Well, I'm still André, a living in since 2019, that part didn't change.

I was diagnosed with and back in 2023, and while the year of 2023 was a disaster in itself, I think I learned to live better with my own characteristics and quirks, and reinforced to myself the idea that being different or unique, and letting that visible to the world, is not bad.

Today I officially launched the individual commercial use license for komorebi, the tiling window manager for Windows

lgug2z.com/software/komorebi

I had a lot of anxiety around this announcement, but the feedback from the core community has been very positive, and I even had license sales today! ♥️

komorebi's commercial use licensing is an honor system; there is no phoning home and there are no activation keys or licensing servers - I really hope that this will be a sustainable model which can be maintained indefinitely

komorebi is a project that I have spent half a decade building so far, and will probably spend many more decades improving and maintaining

My hope for this year is that introducing commercial use licensing will eventually make it financially viable for me to work on komorebi full-time - and who knows, maybe I could even start making all those jokes about a cross-platform tiling window manager a reality

I like that @deno_land tries to be an all-in solution. I like that about go as well. Good tooling, rich standard library. What is difficult, though, is that the js ecosystem is so fragmented. For instance, I’m trying to use drizzle ORM with SQLite. That’s far from straightforward. They don’t include examples for Deno. Translating commands to how Deno likes them is a hassle and I run into issues with migrations

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗙𝗢𝗦𝗦?

means "Free and Open Source software".

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗙/𝗟𝗢𝗦𝗦?

means "Free / Libre and Open Source software".

Both acronyms identify applications that are not closed source and that offer full transparency of their inner workings and processes.
Be careful, as these acronyms are used where a rough categorization is needed and their meaning depends on the context where you find them.

My paper on adaptation after-effects in autistic and non-autistic teenagers is out in Autism Research! 🎉

"Autistic and nonautistic adolescents do not differ in adaptation to gaze direction"

These autistic teens show a large adaptation after-effect behaviourally, though we don't see the after-effects in EEG, and we try to interpret this in light of Predictive Processing accounts of autism.

doi.org/10.1002/aur.3118

Two panels with boxplots, the lefthand one subtitled "Pre-adaptation" and the righthand one subtitled "Post-adaptation". The legend shows blue solid lines for "Autistic group" and red dashed lines for "Nonautistic group". On both, the y axis reads "Proportion" and goes from 0 to 1 and the x axis reads "Adapted", "Direct" and "Unadapted".

In the lefthand Pre-adaptation panel, the boxplots for both groups are around 0.25 for both Adapted and Unadapted, with Direct at around 0.5. In the righthand Post-adaptation panel, the boxplots for both groups are around 0 for Adapted, around 0.6 for Direct and around 0.3 for Unadapted. This means that both groups responded similarly to the manipulation and both showed a strong adaptation after-effect.

For everyone wanting to test out OS/1337 there's good news:

You can just clone the repo or pull it as :
github.com/OS-1337/OS1337

and then just run ./scripts/build.sh

and within a few mins it'll spit out a bootable image in /build/0.CORE/ to put on a 3,5" FDD or run in a VM [may it be or ]...

Thanks to @SweetAIBelle for the generous contributions!

So apparently server administrators on the #Fediverse won’t be able to name custom emoji in their native languages and expect them to work in Mastodon, because according to @Gargron non-ASCII signs are hard to input and diacritics shouldn’t change the meaning of words:

https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/28572#issuecomment-1878952504

No, in my view emoji identifiers shouldn’t be ‘straightforward to input for everyone’. Custom emoji are local to a server; they should be straightforward to input for the users of that server. People from other servers don’t ever have to type their names (unless their administrators choose to add them to their own server), so their ability to type them is completely irrelevant.

Why should a server made specifically for people speaking Russian or Japanese have to use ASCII for their emoji identifiers? Their users have no trouble typing Cyrillic or Kanji signs; it’s what they already do when they make a post; it’s how they normally talk. Why force them to use a different language/alphabet when typing emoji identifiers?

Moreover, linking the username issue makes no sense whatsoever. Usernames are typed across servers and it makes sense to impose stricter technical limitations so more people can read, write and recognise them. This is not the case for emoji; you rarely ever need to type other servers’ emoji identifiers. Normally you don’t even get to see them; you only get to see the picture they represent! Assuming server admins do their job responsibly, there is zero added confusion for anyone involved.

I understand that Unicode is complex, language support is challenging and compromises might be necessary at times. But can we please accept the existence of different languages and writing systems as a reality that we should try to accommodate for, rather than change or circumvent? Yes, a and á are different signs. Yes, they might radically change the meaning of a word. That’s not a proposition for us to accept or reject; that’s the reality of our multilingual world, and should be the basis of our discussion.

Don't have time for a banner grab but still interested in basic info about a server?

Well taking advantage of a server's inability to process '%' b/c it expects two hex digits to follow; in many cases it errors

Preventing this from happening is actually easy

It requires an essential secure programming principle: verify, validate, and sanitize your input

This principle should be applied to EVERY input, and yes the URL is input

Using /% you can generate an error on many servers, and when they have not bothered to hide information it can be revealing.

Very excited to share this preprint I wrote with Danaja Rutar, @LorijnZ , @francescopoli & Sabine Hunnius.

We first introduce and define its terms with *lots* of examples, and then point out that it cannot yet account for

PP claims to be a unifying account of , and as such should apply to all humans.

We propose two additions which are necessary not only for completeness of PP,
but also for to be able to use it.

A set of graphs showing probability distributions over sizes of objects. There are 3 panels, A, B, and C, and each has a graph with a long caption.

A. Before I walk out of my house, I have a representation of the sizes of vehicles I have seen before, shown here in blue. Size is the variable we are depicting, and the expected value is represented by the probability of each value on the x axis. I have seen mostly cars of medium size, some smaller motorbikes and some larger vans, so the probabilities reflect this. The mean of this distribution is the point estimate of my prior expectation, and the inverse of the variance is the precision of the expectation.

B. When I do walk out of my house, I make a new observation. I see the elephant which has turned up on my street, and the estimate of its size is shown here in green. I have some uncertainty around the size of the elephant, because vision isn’t that reliable for estimating size, so the distribution has some variance. Because there is little overlap between the distributions, despite the uncertainty about the actual size, I can still tell that the elephant is larger than the expected vehicle size.
C. Under the standard Bayesian integration to update my model, I would come up with the new estimate of the value of the variable parked-object size, shown here in red. Note that this integration loses some of the specific details of the observation and results in a general expectation for the size of all parked objects.

Here is our paper! My shows how certain adult neurons resist activity changes.

On a macro level, this could provide a new hypothesis for why adults exhibit resistance to , , and .

A key question is why? It may not only be a negative byproduct of age but could be an evolutionary advantage to resist trauma or external influence after we've found "successful strategies" while younger.

frontiersin.org/articles/10.33

Neruons in adults are rigid and more difficult to adapt, which is shown with straight lines connecting neurons in their brains. Children have more flexibility and vulnerability to serious upset, shown by curved lines connecting their neuronal circuits.
