Since turned on their new AI integration in Google Search a few days ago, search result quality has taken an insanely dramatic nosedive to the core of the earth. Wrong answers, crazy answers, lying answers, bizarre statements -- rapidly becoming unusable.

Wow, 2ⁿᵈ time in 2 days that I can work in quotes from ST:TNG,“Unification” (S05E07-8)!
To quote the Ferengi, Omag¹:
> Omag: “Hypothetically speaking?”
> Riker: “Yes.”
> Omag: “I never learned to speak hypothetical.”

IOW, E_TOO_MANY_NON_HYPOTHETICAL_PROBLEMS_WITH_AI

¹ I had to look up Omag's name — my ST:TNG knowledge is not *that* encyclopedic. But see image: Google's G-E-H-munyae can't tell Klingons from Ferengi.

Google's Gemini (which, BTW, is pronounced G-E-H-munyae per https://fedi.copyleft.org/@bkuhn/116156527244571198 ) answers a search for:
“never learned to speak hypothetical ferengi st:tng: episode”
with
> “The phrase "I never learned to speak hypothetical" is a memorable line spoken by the character Gowron in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Unification II" (Season 5, Episode 8). The Romulan character is refusing to engage in a speculative scenario regarding a missing Vulcan ship during a tense conversation with Captain Picard and Data”

'The threat' is absolutely brilliantly written.

Screenshot from an article about how Google push their AI into GMail:

'We hope you like more AI in your Gmail inbox, because Google is "bringing Gmail into the Gemini era." It'll be on by default, but the good news is that you can disable it.

The threat, issued on Thursday by Google's VP of product Blake Barnes, sees the company expanding the reach of a trio of inbox AI features that were previously only available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. You know - the folks who actually wanted the stuff.'

Three planets and the waning crescent moon in the morning sky.

The three planets are in a straight line that's tilted from vertical a bit. (And this line roughly shows us the ecliptic.)

The highest planet is Jupiter, below and to the right of the moon.

Below Jupiter, and brightest of the three planets, is Venus.

At the bottom, nestled next to a cloud wisp, is Mercury.

Left of Jupiter and Venus, near the edge of the frame, are the stars Castor and Pollux of the constellation Gemini.

NOIRLab image of the week

Lights of the Night Show at Gemini North

Credit: International Gemini Observatory/NOIRLab/NSF/AURA/J. Pollard
noirlab.edu/public/images/iotw

Laser light and star trails combine for a cosmic light show at Gemini North, one half of the International Gemini Observatory which is supported in part by the U.S. National Science Foundation and operated by NSF NOIRLab, on Maunakea in Hawai‘i. This scene was created by combining multiple timelapse images.

In the foreground sits Gemini North, situated near the highest point in the Pacific Basin at an altitude of 4213 meters (13,822 feet). The orange streaks were created by Gemini’s Laser Guide Star (LGS) system at several different observing positions. The laser creates an ‘artificial star’ by interacting with atoms in the upper atmosphere approximately 90 kilometers (50 miles) above the Earth. Earth’s atmosphere distorts light from the laser-created ‘star’, just as it distorts the light from objects under study. By measuring these distortions, Gemini’s adaptive optics system can correct for them in the telescope’s science observations, resulting in crisper, clearer views of the Universe for astronomers.

In the background, stars swirl around Polaris, the northern hemisphere’s pole star. As Earth rotates over the course of a night, stars seem to circle the celestial poles, showing up as trails in long-exposure photographic images.

For those of you on mobile (and desktop) who find it difficult to write alt text for images you upload, I’ve built a simple website to do it for you.

It’s very basic right now, but it uses Google’s Gemini AI to write the alt text for images you upload.

Current testing indicates I probably need to dial it back to make the alt text less detailed, but if you’d like to try it out and see if it works for you then feel free:

Hello fediverse,
because it's common in this space, this is a little #introduction

I'm completely new to all this Social Media stuff and I was very skeptical about it in the past. Due to the evil nature of their corporations, I avoid Facebook and Twitter like the plague. But because ActivityPub is a free protocol and not bound to corporate interests it seems interesting. I'm not sure if I'll like it or post frequently - I'm just trying it out.

I'm an enthusiastic computer, GNU/Linux and *BSD hobbyist. I like to tinker around with hard- and software in my little homelab. I'm in no way a professional or expert of any kind in the IT field. Just doing things for fun.

Also interested in Gemini and the smolnet/indieweb. The way the internet is heading these days isn't very promising. When I discovered the gemini protocol in 2021 I was imediately intrigued. So I set up my own little capsule which I now regard as my private home in the online world (link in profile).

I hope we have a good time together!
