The Beatles song “Yesterday” was, for a time, my favorite—back when I was a brooding teenager. Or maybe it shared that honor with “Help,” another track from the same album. “Yesterday” conjured feelings of loss and hinted at emotions that felt ancient, even though I was only thirteen and my life had barely begun. Why it resonated so deeply, I’m not sure. I didn’t have a long-ago past to mourn. But at that age, thirteen years is a literal lifetime.

Thinking of it that way, it’s been more than five lifetimes since.

The lyric about not being half the man I used to be always made me pause. What was I thinking then? Because, quite literally, I wasn’t yet half the man I would become. We see and feel everything from our own shifting vantage point—fluid, evolving—as we add new experiences to our repertoire.

July, 1976. Freshman Orientation Weekend @ East Carolina University. The buzz in the men's dorm where I stayed was about a free pig-picking out in the country with kegs-a-plenty where *all the girls would be.

Shy, queer me sipped a beer and watched guys from the perimeter, away from the commotion and smoke of a pig, slowly turning over a fire.

Someone behind me said, "Who *are these fucking people!" and snort-laughed. I turned to see a woman in shorts, tank top and low-rise Converse, smirk fixed.

Amy of Elizabeth, New Jersey and I were instant friends, and she was, that day, the first person I came out to in Greenville.

"Duh!" was her response, laughing and asking me who in the crowd I found attractive.

Sometime later, the DJ played "Amie" by Pure Prairie League and Amy of Elizabeth, New Jersey screamed and danced! It was HER song. ❤️

So what's going on with this instance? Is this my "main" presence or am I still on shellsharks.social? Fair question. The answer is, yes! This is a #GoToSocial instance, on a new fun, shiny, vanity domain. If it works out, I might end up moving all my activity over here and shutting down the Mastodon instance I have at shellsharks.social. Until then, I'm operating out of both spaces. This also means that for now, I haven't migrated my followers (or followed accounts) over here, so don't be offended if I haven't followed you back yet! I don't want to knock this fairly low-spec'ed instance over so I'm taking it slow with how I am using it.

Why am I doing this? Well for one main reason really, I wanted an instance where I could post more than 500 characters at a time. GtS gives me that, and much more. Bonus points for A. being less resource intensive than Mastodon (so cheaper to run), B. more customizable and C. I could get an even more ridiculous vanity domain.

The insert cable uses the tip as the Aux Send and the ring as the Aux Return

As you can see the possibilities are quite vast since it is very very easy to connect your beautiful effects from your Effect Rack to your console.

In case you've used your monitor outputs on your console for a headphone Amp & you need one Aux bus to send a signal to a separate monitor on the ground, you will only be able to use mono effects in your mix using Aux bus two. I would advise you to use the headphone output from your sub mixer to feed your headphone amp.

You may also connect your effect using an insert cable so that it works dedicated only on one channel

Just like with built in effects your Send is decided by Aux Send your Return is decided by Aux Return which gives The amount of decibels dB of the effect in the mix

If your console only has two Aux busses you can either use both for the stereo effect, or use one for two discrete effects if you do not wish to daisy chain them. You will then have two parallel effects which can be used layered on your whole mix.

There are hundreds of ways of connecting an effect to your mixing console. There is one way to connect an effect to my sub mixer

When you use the Auxiliary busses you have to send the signal through a tip/sleeve cable to the effect, then return the signal to the console Aux return Channel. For a stereo effect you need to use two Aux busses.
Your console has send Pot. meters and return Pot. meters for every bus.

However I am tired of constantly switching between the sub mixer which is very handy, for all my instruments and a direct connection to the main console which costs me two XLR connectors, and literally two mics less to connect
The cables are of 3m in length which is within the parameters of an instrument cable that should be no more than 6 - 9 meters. This means the cables are not picking up any noise from the environment

I should also mention that the unstable output devices are connected with the sub mixer through RCA to 1/4" cables, with No stable matching Transformers in between. The cables are 3 meters in length.

When I want to record from the main audio device, I take a passive or active direct box with the active direct box padded to -20dB.

¡The lesson learned is that the noise is still carried through the sleeve pole of the devices, **through** the powered off sub mixer, all the way up to the main mixing console!

I have a replacement coming in, of the important recording audio device, which comes with proper 1/4" connections. All the unstable devices have RCA outputs.

I love how physics works, especially when it challenges my logic thought

Only when the final device was pulled off the hum disappeared. Mind you that the sub mixer is powered off so no noise should come through. Then I remembered that the negative (sleeve) side of the devices was of course still connected with the main mixing console. When the devices are connected On a passive or active direct box the hum is pushed down by The Transformers to level which is acceptable, somewhere at minus 68dB

Because of reasons that I'm still tracing down the sub mixer cannot cut the hum that comes from the unstable connections enough so that it goes down real far within the noise plane. Just for fun I powered off the sub mixer pushed up the volume of my headphone amp was not surprised that I was still hearing that hum. One by one I pulled out the connectors of my unstable audio devices

I love the fact that you keep on learning when you do audio. I currently have a few devices which have unstable outputs. I have connected them to my sub mixer which does the conversion to stable on its Master outputs TRS which go to the main mixing console.

I left Spotify in 2021 and started listening to my own music collection. I already had the MP3s and/or the CDs from which to rip them, so I hosted them on my Plex server and started listening to them using the excellent Plexamp mobile client.

One thing I missed from Spotify was the "wrapped" listening summary... but I'd always believed I could improve on what Spotify delivered. This winter break I spent some time implementing a solution in Microsoft Fabric. I used data from my Plex server's SQLite database for recent years, and from the JSON files that Spotify will send you if you make a GDPR data request for older years. I standardized enriched both data sets with the open source MusicBrainz database, and then visualized some Spotify-inspired vanity metrics in Power BI.

In the highland rainforest of NSW, in the Werrikimbe region, there’s a community of superb lyrebirds. Lyrebirds are known for their unparalleled mimicry: they can reproduce the call of any bird they hear (and many other sounds as well). They collect songs like crows collect shiny objects. The variety and complexity of their repertoire, and the skill with which they deliver it, determines their reproductive success.

They also compose songs of their own. These songs vary from region to region; they are learned by lyrebirds when they're young, and passed down from generation to generation with remarkable stability. If a lyrebird finds or produces a new melody that other lyrebirds like, they absorb it into the communal repertoire.

The lyrebirds that live in the Werrikimbe are called flute lyrebirds because in winter, when they're in love, they sing a complex rising melody which sounds like scales played on a flute. This "flute accent" exists nowhere else in the world; it’s unique to this one community. On cold mornings, it floats down through the mists like an enchantment.

How did this haunting melody come about? It's said that a young boy kept a tame lyrebird, and every day the bird listened to him practicing the flute. Then one day the bird escaped. It went to live with its wild brethren, and taught them this new song.

But the truth is much more magical: Lyrebirds composed this song all on their own. It's more complex than any human flautist could ever hope to achieve, and it’s got features unique to lyrebird melody and anatomy.

Lyrebirds live and breathe music. They are built for music. They spend their lives studying the soundscape. They listened to the world around them, all of the pain and suffering and desire and joy, and this is what they sang back into it.

Time for a new #introductions

I am ostensibly human and can prove it cryptographically.

I like Art, all art, and most technologies. I hack mostly Perl, Bash, and Python but have spent the most of my time building websites with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (ever since Flash/ActionScript died). I've been working with AI since long before LLMs were a thing, mostly for creative endeavors. I survived the flame wars and will no longer tolerate that kind of behavior. I am not a "Real Programmer" and neither is anyone else.

I play guitar, mandolin, some piano & drums, and I'm picking up ukulele a little. I crochet manageably and knit poorly. I can still do a fair number of my old magic tricks, but nobody really wants to see that kinda stuff anymore. I occasionally draw, collage, and paint as well as repair most household objects.

I have art and writing on my website(s), and if you can find them all hopefully you enjoy some of it, because I am not a "Content Creator" and I'm not interested in becoming an "Influencer," I just want to make stuff and experience life and share it with the world at my discretion.

I'm married with 2 kids, but usually I keep them out of my online interactions for their privacy.

Who am I: a lady, a bitch, a woman, a human. Cisgender, queer, white. Living in New York, where I was born, but I have traveled. Doing my best to support my Darling Nonbinary Spouse in their challenges being one of very few Black people in our community. Currently working as a drafter of soil/water conservation infrastructure. Before that, I bounced around a lot. Did construction and childcare and food service and data entry and more.

What you can expect from me: PLENTY boosts. I see it, I like it, I boost. Regular posts about #ClimateChange, #Degrowth, #GreenBuilding, and related topics. Commentary about social justice. Some news, but more opinion, about USA and NYS politics. I tag these (USpol/NYpol), but don't CW them. Edit: almost forgot to mention: I'm an anarchist apparently (I had to look it up) and I hate capitalism.

Other, less weighty stuff I like to talk about: #music of any genre. I'm developing the desire to become a DJ and collect vinyl, somebody stop me! #Crochet and fiber arts. #SciFi, #SpecFic. Not a skilled shitposter but I do appreciate the art form.

Fair warning: I like to argue. If you don't enjoy seeing someone go back and forth with mildly offensive bootlickers from time to time, I may not be your cup of tea. And don't worry about my mental health WRT arguments, to my brain a good argument is a lot like a good video game.

Also on the subject of this year's music, I have made an end-of-year playlist, of some songs what I liked from 2023. As it was such a good year for music I enjoy, it's an awfully long playlist, a trifle over three hours.

There've been years in the past when I've struggled to get much beyond one hour, so three hours is a lot for me.

Even then, there was a lot that I missed out - nothing on here from Erland Cooper, Lila Tirando a Violeta, Erin Hopes, Craven Faults, all of whom made records that I loved.

Second track: an upbeat, bright theme for horn and woodwind punctuated by timpani with strings providing a quick loping accompaniment. Third track: a sinister theme for oboe over muted strings, opening to a broad chord for full orchestra. Fourth track: growly bass strings and bassoon play a rapid ostinato with an aggressive brass-and-string melody over them. The intensity subsides just to build again. The mood is hectic and overwhelmed though it stops briefly for a slightly anxious chord before carrying on. Hey everyone! I'm Matthew Whitaker, an Emmy Nominated professional blind touring musician, producer, singer, songwriter, and accessibility advocate. My musical journey has led me to collaborate with legends like Stevie Wonder, Christian McBride, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Kim Tibs. You might have seen my performances on shows like The Harry Connick Jr. Show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and Showtime at The Apollo.

I'm passionate about making technology accessible for blind users and love working with developers to achieve this. A Juilliard graduate, I currently serve as the Minister of Music at New Hope Baptist Church in Hackensack, New Jersey, where I was born and raised.

Beyond music, I enjoy video and audio games, skiing, indoor rock climbing, and bowling. I love spending time with family and exploring new musical and non-musical adventures. Excited to connect with you all here!

How rude of me - I haven't introduced myself. I have been Tom all my life - sometimes, as a GP, Dr. Tom (remote rural places and occasionally really remote - Antarctica and the Falkland Is.) Love all kinds of #music but especially "classical", #poetry and am fascinated by playing with words. An updated #introduction after giving it some more thought ...

I'm Matt, an artist and musician based in Toronto/Tkaronto. I work in and around computation, thinking about its histories, politics, culture, and computation-as-material. My main efforts right now are around computational poetics, expanded sculpture, and net art. I believe computers could be something different in the world, and try to embody that in my work and life.

I make music mainly as New Tendencies, but sometimes under other names and used to play in a number of punk/post-punk bands in addition to my more experimental/electronic/computer music and sound art. I also have a very very small label/press called <blink>.

I live with my partner of over 20 years and a 10 year old Bengal cat named Iggy (because she's a real wild child).

My online life goes back to around 1992 when I started calling BBS's, and running one... then soon after getting an internet connection and basically living on IRC where I got into the demo/tracker scene and started making computer music.

Also love sci-fi, video games, Hackers (1995), bad reality tv, cocktails...

I'm a cultural omnivore and am interested in a ridiculously wide range of topics from #history to #art to #music #science #travel #plants #animals #cats and I love anything #weird and wonderful.

Until recently, I house sat globally full-time so people who've followed me for a bit would have seen me around recording the various sagas of my (mainly) feline overlords.

Lately I have settled in a delightful small city in Aotearoa New Zealand and I frequently share bits and pieces from my wanderings out and about.
