A private #door at #BangorCathedral for #Doorsday

#Bangor Cathedral stands on the site where Saint Deiniol founded his monastery in 525 AD. The #cathedral was built on a low-lying, inconspicuous site, possibly to avoid attracting Viking raiders from the sea in ancient times. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries, with its origins dating from the 12th century, though much of the current structure reflects later reconstructions —particularly from the 15th century and a major 19th-century restoration.

Bangor grew alongside the cathedral, so the city celebrates its 1,500th anniversary this year, making it the oldest (cathedral) city in #Wales. Happy birthday! 🎉

While browsing my gallery for a #door to share for #Doorsday, this one caught my eye today: a small #church in the village of #Navazzo, part of #Gargnano, on the western shore of Lake Garda. This 16th-century church is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta. We didn't go inside, as we were just passing by on our hike up Monte Castello di Gaino

On the High Plains of far north-central Montana (7/23/2025).

A black and white landscape photo of an abandoned church with a graveyard just beyond. The church is on the left side of the frame and it faces toward the right. The front door is boarded up as are the five windows on the right side of the building. There's a short in height entrance with an cross on top and then a taller wall behind the front entrance area that has the bell tower and a cross on top. The building is Spanish mission style. The building is a light color and the roof is dark. There's a tall cross on the ground immediately behind the church. In front there's a tall wood entrance where a gate likely once was and there are three short sections of fence on each side of the gate framework. A large commercial-sized rusted metal trashcan sits on the right next to the gravel drive in the foreground. The graveyard is seen on the slight hill behind and to the right of the church building. There's a few clouds low on the horizon otherwise the sky is clear.

Well, why not collect Norwegian stave churches? I have only visited less than ten so I still have almost twenty left 😊 And, there is even an original moved from Norway to Polen in 1842, Vang stavkyrkje.

This is the very small Lomen stavkirke in Valdres. It is dated to be around 1192.

Der Ort erinnert an eine Westernstadt, es gibt keine befestigten Straßen, nur Sandwege, sodass eher Kutschen und Reiter*innen als Autos zu sehen sind. Einmal im Jahr kurz vor Pfingsten strömen 1 Mio. Menschen hierher, während El Rocío den Rest des Jahres keine 2.000 Einwohner*innen hat.

Got around to writing up on the site about a visit to Exeter Cathedral we took in 2014 today (you can't rush these things) and hadn't realised at the time that the cathedral has the longest, uninterrupted, medieval, stone vaulted ceiling in the world. Fabulous Norman/Gothic architecture and very interesting memorials and reliefs within the building.

It's a portrait orientation view from inside a cathedral looking up and along the long nave of the building and its vaulted ceiling which runs uninterrupted along the entire length. Each of the five columns we can see along each side reaches the roof and splits into eleven branching ribs forming skeletal hands joining at their finger tips all the way down.

With 4,500 pipes, the largest organ in Colombia rises majestically under the central dome of the Primatial Cathedral. The dome is supported by four pendentives, which were decorated in the early 20th century and represent the four evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, each accompanied by their traditional symbols: an angel, a lion, an ox, and an eagle.

The Crypt of Saint Zama / La Cripta di San Zama ⛪ for #spookysaturday

Underneath the Abbey of SS Naborre and Felice is where you can find St. Zama's Crypt. It has been a lot of things over the years (for example at one stage it was a Military Hospital and a Lazaret) During the 3rd century, in this site, there already existed the first and most important Christian center. It is said that the first archibishop of Bologna, Saint Zama, around the year 270, had improved the preexisting church, dedicating it to St. Peter. It also used to house the bodies of the first bishops - but they are no longer there! ✨
