Kyoto Gyoen is a large garden in central Kyoto that includes the Kyoto Imperial Palace. From early November, the leaves begin to change color. The ginkgo trees turn a brilliant golden yellow in late November. This is the largest ginkgo tree in the garden.

Momiji-no-michi (Maple Path), located in Kyoto’s Yase area, is a 300-meter walkway lined with towering trees. The 3,700 m² area is open to the public for free, making it a peaceful spot to enjoy the season’s beauty.

Hōnen-in Temple is located in Kyoto City, near the Philosopher’s Path in Sakyo Ward.
Founded in 1206 and restored in 1680, its thatched-roof gate and unique Japanese garden are truly beautiful.
In autumn, the garden is adorned with a mix of vibrant colors.

This gate is reserved for the Emperor and for chokushi—Imperial Messengers sent to perform rituals or deliver imperial messages.

Intuition pointed to where I would most enjoy Kyōto today after a long time. The Ōkōchi Sansō (大河内山荘) is the former villa of a silent movie star, with traditional architecture like tea houses developed thoughtfully over a period of 30 years. It has a strolling garden that winds up to the top of a hillside in Arashiyama. I therefore expected to catch at least some changing leaves, but they were at all stages and colors in a dazzling display on a clear day!

Sekizan Zenin Temple🍁
Nestled in the foothills of northern Kyoto, Sekizan Zenin is a sub-temple of Enryakuji founded in 888. It enshrines Sekizan Myōjin, the guardian deity of the Tendai school, and stands in the northeast “kimon” direction of the Imperial Palace—long believed to protect the city.
The temple is also a serene spot for viewing autumn foliage, with beautiful maple leaves lining the approach and within the precincts.

What's blossoming in early autumn at the Kyōto Botanical Gardens? I can only post a few photos, but the water lilies are lasting way after the summer, and I've never seen the type in the last photo. There were also wide, round lily pads not shown here that looked artificial because they were so neatly turned up on the outer edges like round cookie pans. I'll post that and more if people would like me to. Outside the huge park, the first photo is of one of the Kamo river's regulars, an egret (no regret!), from a pretty close but respectful distance, with a view of the surrounding greenery and northern mountains. The Gardens used to be free for anyone over 70 by showing my Japanese driver's license. Now it's a thousand yen for a yearly pass (about U.S $7), so going 4+ times, it gets cheaper. Access by subway. It has different attractions nearly year round.

I had never been to the famous Rokkaku-dō (六角堂), because it's in the central business district of Kyōto where I rarely go. But after I met the Imperial family member in charge of it and the Ikenobō (池坊) national flower arrangement organization, I decided to go. The Rokkaku-dō building was in such a small and crowded but charming courtyard that it was difficult to get a photo of it. After seeing the large Ikenobō building, I thought why not try to thank Ikenobō Yasuko-sama for the elegant calendar she had given me at a concert. A smile, polite attitude, and fluent Japanese got me through the guard, building receptionist, and to her secretary, but she was away in Tōkyō. I declined the offer to leave my calling card, because it was a small thing to bother them all with. I left with everyone on friendly terms.

Our family friend Sanshiro came from Tōkyō to hold a solo concert at The Museum of Kyōto (京都文化博物館), singing chanson and handling complex Debussy piano melodies. The red brick building, as I had suspected, was from the Meiji Era, built in 1906. I'm often surprised by what I discover in Kyōto, and Japanese people are reserved and humble, so you don't know who you might be dealing with. When six of us went for coffee after the performance, one of the elderly women pulled Sanshiro out to her temple, which turned out to have the famous six-sided Rokkaku-dō building, and her family has the Ikenobō (池坊) school of flower arrangement. More astonishingly, she was not only a former Cabinet member but also one of Japan's small Imperial family. She gave me the elegant calendar shown in the fourth photo.

サルスベリと京都銀行三条支店 (旧・第一銀行京都支店)。
三条通はかつて銀行街だった関係もあって辰野式建築が多い。なお、この建物は一度解体された後に再建されたレプリカ。

今日の山鉾巡り(その2): 橋弁慶山
昨日も上げた橋弁慶山の内、五条大橋。中央に写っている、手前から2つ目の擬宝珠だけ頭がとんがってないんだけど、ここに牛若丸を乗せられるようになっている。

平家物語の宇治川の合戦をモチーフにした舁山。巡行の際には橋弁慶山に負けないほど御神体がアクロバティックに組み上げられるけど、宵山期間はこうして並べて展示されている。

昨晩、黒主山の備品がお洒落ってポストがTLに流れてたけど、八幡山では入口に幕を下ろしてたり、役行者山の町内では等間隔に献燈の提灯を並べてたり、後祭は山鉾町は町内全体で何かをしているところが多く、山鉾町の熱量を直に感じやすくて歩いてて楽しい。
なお、黒主山は今日午前の時点で山建てどころか御神体の展示まで終わっていた、早いｗ

今朝の散歩の写真を現像してて気づいたんだけど、菊水鉾の関の部分に菊が飾られてるの初めて知った。
なかなか見る機会ないけど、芯棒(真木)は鉾頭だけじゃなく、榊から上の部分がそれぞれの鉾で違ってて楽しい。

写真は四条烏丸の長刀鉾の様子。長刀鉾は昨日から山鉾建てが始まってるんだけど、今朝から始まった函谷鉾や月鉾、鶏鉾より一工程だけ進捗しているくらい。

家元家系・本因坊家は日海が暮らしていた寂光寺の塔頭の名前を由来としているらしい。また、寂光寺が現在の場所へ移る前は寺町二条に所在してて、そちらにも「本因坊発祥の地」として碑が設置されている。

このあたりは意外と大雨などで浸水・冠水する地域で、その際の緊急放水路として以前から存在してたんだけど、現在の堀川は21世紀初頭の環境整備事業で水流を復活させた結構新しい川。鴨川と合流する淀川水系に含まれるので一応、一級河川。
