Earlier in the year we went to and it rained.

A very famous scene at Stourhead, photographed from under a tree near the entrance to the walk around the lake.
Front left, a bridge, with the central lake extending though 5 visible arches to the narrower inflow in the bottom left corner.
In the distance a temple modelled on the Pantheon in Rome, the lake before it, and trees and then sky beyond it. There's a grassy slope in the right foreground, and rain is visible on the water surface.

A Rainy Day in Fall Colors 🍁☔️

I visited Shinnyo-do Temple in Sakyo Ward to see the fall foliage today. There were only a few tourists, so I was able to take many photos.

Last but not least batch of photos from the Arashiyama area of Kyōto. This series started with a hillside villa featuring a strolling garden and practically all colors of changing leaves in autumn:
hcommons.social/@SteveMcCarty/
and hcommons.social/@SteveMcCarty/
Then photos of more renowned areas of Arashiyama:

and these four photos.

As a Japanologist and longtime professor in Japan, I usually give sufficient historical and cultural information along with photos, or introduce publications, as you can see at hcommons.social/@SteveMcCarty

Stunning fall leaves in the garden of Nanzenji Temple🍁🇯🇵

Some sunlit leaves have turned a vivid red, while others remain green and yellow🍃.

Hōnen-in Temple is located in Kyoto City, near the Philosopher’s Path in Sakyo Ward.
Founded in 1206 and restored in 1680, its thatched-roof gate and unique Japanese garden are truly beautiful.

In autumn, the garden is adorned with a mix of vibrant colors.

The momiji maple trees lining the front of the Chokushimon Gate are turning beautifully into their autumn colors.

This gate is reserved for the Emperor and for chokushi—Imperial Messengers sent to perform rituals or deliver imperial messages.

Sekizan Zenin Temple🍁

Nestled in the foothills of northern Kyoto, Sekizan Zenin is a sub-temple of Enryakuji founded in 888. It enshrines Sekizan Myōjin, the guardian deity of the Tendai school, and stands in the northeast “kimon” direction of the Imperial Palace—long believed to protect the city.

The temple is also a serene spot for viewing autumn foliage, with beautiful maple leaves lining the approach and within the precincts.

Kiyomizu-dera—one of the Buddhist temples we visited in Japan (one of my favorites).

A landscape view of Kiyomizu-dera, a Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan.

The temple and pagoda are visible in the background, surrounded by trees, many of which are transitioning into vibrant autumn colors. One tree on the left, in particular, is nearing peak red foliage. The whole area is very centered toward nature, encouraging visitors and worshippers to find calmness within themselves while appreciating both the history and beauty of the place.

The 3-story pagoda is orange and gold, while the temple is a more natural brown and gold. sad constructed using wooden pillars over a mountainside. Both are stunning.

One of the shrines in Kiyomizu-dera. A stone wall and adjoining fountain set a peaceful, centering aura, while a mini red temple sits atop the structure, requesting reverence and tranquility. In the background are many trees, some of which are transitioning to red.

Old And New

Details In The AltText

This is a black and white photo in landscape format of a mythical and fierce looking sea creature on the roof of a temple with a modern high-side office block in the background. Singapore (2015).

In the centre of the image is the wooden carving of a mythical sea creature, facing away from the camera and perched on the ridge of an arched, pitched roof. The creature has a serpentine Dragon like appearance, with a long scaly body, pointed white, triangular dorsal spines, four legs with bird like clawed feet. The head has open jaws with large white teeth, two small ears and two antennas extending from the snout. In the background is a white, modern, high-rise office block with only the middle floors in view.
Our sea creature is on the roof of the Thian Hock Keng temple in Singapore. Translated meaning 'Palace of Heavenly Happiness'. The temple is built for the worship of Mazu, a Chinese sea goddess and is the oldest and most important temple for the Hokkien people in Singapore. As a footnote, there is also a Buddhist shrine in the back of the temple, so all bases are covered - I like that, I cannot imagine many other religions being so accommodating.

I had never been to the famous Rokkaku-dō (六角堂), because it's in the central business district of Kyōto where I rarely go. But after I met the Imperial family member in charge of it and the Ikenobō (池坊) national flower arrangement organization, I decided to go. The Rokkaku-dō building was in such a small and crowded but charming courtyard that it was difficult to get a photo of it. After seeing the large Ikenobō building, I thought why not try to thank Ikenobō Yasuko-sama for the elegant calendar she had given me at a concert. A smile, polite attitude, and fluent Japanese got me through the guard, building receptionist, and to her secretary, but she was away in Tōkyō. I declined the offer to leave my calling card, because it was a small thing to bother them all with. I left with everyone on friendly terms.
