Still Life with Books and a Violin (1628) by Jan Davidsz de Heem (1606-1684). De Heem is known mainly for the colorful, flamboyant flower still-lifes he painted from 1650. But before that, he painted simple still-lifes in shades of brown and grey. Educated viewers would have recognized the titles of the books on the table and understood that their central theme was the concept of fate.

Stylos bic

Rhapsody in Blue stands as an iconic piece of American music with riveting orchestration, and a cultural footprint that reflects the modernity of the early 20th century.

Cover of the original sheet music of Rhapsody in Blue

Harms - http://riverwalkjazz.stanford.edu/#bonus-content/george-gershwin-20s

The design is bold and artistic, featuring an abstract, modernist composition with a mix of geometric and organic shapes in shades of red, black, beige, and blue.

The typography is striking, with "RHAPSODY IN BLUE" displayed in large, decorative block letters that have a mosaic-like pattern.

Below the title, the text reads "For Jazz Band and Piano," emphasizing the fusion of classical and jazz elements in the composition.

A Reading from Homer (1885) by Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912). Through attention to details such as architecture and dress, Alma-Tadema evokes scenes of everyday life in ancient Greece and Rome. However, his pictures are rarely entirely archaeologically accurate. For example, while he accurately rendered the ancient musical instrument on the left, a cithara, he also included a type of rose that did not exist before the 19th century.

stellar-art.pixels.com/feature

Here, a young poet crowned with a laurel wreath reads from Homer to an audience dressed for a festival. The setting is probably Greece toward the end of the seventh century BCE. The Greek letters in the upper right indicate that the place is dedicated to the poet.

Cliff Walk at Pourville (1882) by Claude Monet (1840-1926).

stellar-art.pixels.com/feature

In this work, Monet addressed the problem of inserting figures into a landscape without disrupting the unity of its painterly surface. He integrated these elements with one another through texture and color. The grass—composed of short, brisk, curved brushstrokes—appears to quiver in the breeze, and subtly modified versions of the same strokes and hues suggest the women’s wind-whipped dresses and shawls and the undulation of the sea. X-radiographs show that Monet reduced the rocky outcropping at the far right to balance the proportions of sea and sky.

Graphic from a small text-based ad in the 1980 Jan issue of #Artforum #Magazine, white letters on black . Copy starts with "Welcome The People From The Future, March 9, 1982." Original size is 4.5 x 2.5-inches.

The message is that it's inviting readers to a "reception" or "landing party" for #TimeTravelers, or #Krononauts, that was scheduled for 2 years after the publication date of the magazine.

The ad also includes phone numbers and a PO box which are all long-defunct now. The irony / humor / concept is that we are looking at this from 45 years in its future, just as real Time Travelers will one day look at it from a more distant future(s), and they could elect to travel back to #Baltimore #MD #US on 1982 Mar 09. This kind of documentation (now on #Mastodon & #Fediverse) is crucial to the successful operation of the experiment.

Hello! Time to do an again

I'm Anubi, and I do lots of silly art (mostly in Pixel Art) that aims at cheering up your day!

I've been on mastodon.social under @anubiarts@mastodon.social for a year and a half, but the constant crashes and lag spikes made me move over here

I don't tend to do this often, but I ask you to boost this toot, so this new account gets federated to other instances, thank you!

A Pixel Art Redraw, featuring a cat lying upside down next to a bowl of milk and cereal, with their arms and legs extended. They're very tired, and I relate to them a lot.A Pixel Art Scene, featuring a character in a building staring at the street below, with various other buildings all around. It's beginning to turn into night, perfect time to stare at the surroundings.A Pixel Art Redraw, featuring a cat, staring through a giant bubble that's in front of them, making it look like a little helmet. You'll go far cat!A Pixel Art featuring a frog, who's hanging onto a flower stem, extending their arm forward and offering you a flower. The text "Would you like a flower?" can be read next to the frog. Will you accept their gift?

Two paintings originally known as ‘Tempête’ and ‘Calme’ (Storm and Calm), were commissioned as a pair by Stanislas Augustus, King of Poland, in 1772. However, Vernet instead sold them to the British officer and East India Company official Lord Clive.
These are two of Vernet’s greatest paintings and the type of work for which he was most famous in his day.

November 30 - the birthday of William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) - a French painter, a dominant figure in academic painting during the second half of the 19th century. In his realistic genre paintings, he used mythological themes, making modern interpretations of classical subjects, with an emphasis on the female human body.

Songs of Spring (1889) by William-Adolphe Bouguereau.
Here Bouguereau seeks to capture the essence of springtime in all its meanings. The beauty of the maiden, the early spring blossoms in her lap, the youth of the putti who sing into her ears, the flowers bursting from the ground beneath her feet all evoke the sights, sounds and smells of early spring in the countryside.
In 2019, this painting was sold at Christie's for $3,615,000.
