Union Pacific #4006 Steam Locomotive (#2 of 4)
"Big Boy"
Kirkwood, Missouri, USA

See photo Alt Text for historical information.

Because of its immense size and power, the #4006 and 24 sister unites were nicknamed "Big Boy". Building in 1941 by American Locomotive Company, it was used by Union Pacific to haul heavy freight trains through the Rocky Mountains from Cheyenne, Wyoming and Ogden, Utah. It 132-foot length, weighing 1.2 million pounds, could reach a top speed of 80 miles per hour and a maximum of 6,900 horsepower. Eight of the original locomotives are still in existence.

Photo of the central atrium of the Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation at the American Museum of Natural History. The design evokes a rock canyon, avoiding straight lines in favor of organic curves and contours. Sunlight casts the shadow of a barred window in warm rectangles of light on a central “stone” arch. Further back is the glass-paneled facade and entrance, several stories high, beyond which is a tall tree with vivid green leaves and city buildings and streets.

A working vintage voting machine from the Shirley Chisholm exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York. I felt a small thrill as I pulled the lever for Chisholm — the first Black woman to be elected to Congress and to run for president, in 1972 — and tried to imagine the alternate timeline where she won and took this country to a better place. We’re still trying to get there.

Black and white photo of a vertical list of candidates on the face of a mechanical voting machine. At the top is text that reads “1972 Presidential Primary Election / June 20, 1972” followed by “Col. 1 / DEMOCRATIC” and the candidates’ names: Shirley Chisholm, Hubert Humphrey, Edward Kennedy, John Lindsay, George McGovern, Edmund Muskie, George Wallace. To the right of each name is a square window and a small black lever; most of the windows are blank with the levers pointed up, while the lever for Chisholm has been pulled down, causing an “X” to appear in her window.

If you’ll permit, a photo of a photo. This image has stayed with me ever since I saw it in the Vietnamese Women’s Museum in Hanoi. I grew up with Western narratives of the war, and it was eye-opening to see stories from “the other side.” I find this moment striking — a depiction of joy in resistance, and of communal bonds forged in struggle. (No photo credit, but I’ll add the info if I find it.)

A historical black and white photograph mounted on a red wall at the Vietnamese Women’s Museum. Three female guerrilla soldiers in hats and scarves, carrying rifles, stand outdoors amid indistinct surroundings and share a moment of laughter. I’m sure these photos were used for morale-boosting propaganda (as all sides do in war), but I’m still struck by the apparently sincere lighthearted moment this image seems to capture.

Museum text below the photo reads: Nữ du kích
Female guerillas
Femmes de la guérilla
Củ Chí

(Củ Chí is a district in Southern Vietnam where the photo was taken.)

#fensterfreitag #windowfriday No, this isn't a romantic window of a holiday cottage, but the window of a prison cell in the "Gevangenpoort (prison gate)," a medieval prison in The Hague. Since 1882, the building has been a museum about the history of the building and the prison system. The cell shown here was for the wealthy and the nobility. For the common people, there were small, dark, windowless cells in the basement, sometimes holding as many as 15 men. But food there was free. If you had (payed for) such a beautiful cell with a window and a view, you had to have your own food brought to you. You could also bring your own furniture and servants! Today, all kinds of torture instruments are displayed in this room. That lovely wood-burning stove was used to heat branding irons! #photography #history #fotografie #fediverse #prison #historic #denhaag #thenetherlands #nederland #museum
Photo of a corner of a room, with a white plastered wall on the left containing an open window. The window is split into two sections that open inward. These two windows have red-painted wooden frames and stained glass panes. The windows themselves have crosswise iron round mullions. The light shines into the room. On the right, part of an iron wood-burning stove is visible.

// The #RosettaStone at the #BritishMuseum in London is something of a pilgrimage for us translators. 😋 The stele was found in the Nile Delta near the town of Rashid (Rosetta) and is inscribed with some terribly boring blah blah in three different languages – hieroglyphs, Demotic, and Ancient Greek – which famously unlocked the secret of #Egyptian #hieroglyphs.

An ancient Egyptian stone tablet is covered in columns of engraved hieroglyphs. The carvings are stylised and intricate, depicting various symbols, animals, and human figures. The stone is dark, with lighter markings within the engraved lines. The tablet appears to be a formal inscription or a part of a larger monument, with the carvings arranged neatly in vertical lines.

“Lieblingsoutfit” / Favorite outfit (but not for me)

Of all the outfits Prince wore, the iconic ruffled shirt from the Purple Rain era is my favorite. Displayed at the Met Museum exhibit “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” on view through October.

Prince’s elaborate white polyester shirt against a black backdrop, on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Closeup on the torso and left sleeve (viewer’s right), speckled with see-through dots. Prominently featured is a fall of layered ruffles (a.k.a. a jabot) hanging from a high collar with pearl buttons. The sleeve (along with the unseen one) is puffed and gathered in sections in a 19th-century style. The lighting emphasizes the dotted texture of the embroidered fabric and the play of light and shadow on the sleeve and ruffles.

From the text on the museum placard:

Marie France (French, b. 1945)
Louis & Vaughn (American, founded 1981)
Louis Wells (American, 1957-2018)
Vaughn Terry Jelks (American, b. 1950)
Shirt worn by Prince, ca. 1984

A well-preserved, vintage hairdresser's shop interior, likely from the mid-20th century. The room has light-coloured walls with an arched decorative trim, and a rustic wooden floor. On the left, a large, dark wood and glass display cabinet is filled with various old-fashioned hairdressing tools, products, and equipment. An old electric fan sits on top of the cabinet. In the centre is a classic, dark wooden barber's chair with a white cloth draped over it. To the right, a white ceramic sink and a large mirror are mounted on the wall, with an array of shaving brushes, bottles, and other grooming implements displayed on the shelf. The space has a nostalgic feel, showing the tools of the trade from a bygone era.

Another #FensterFreitag today, because it's a rather messy one. The #window is from the #DeutschesAuswandererhaus (German Emigration Center) #museum in #Bremerhaven. It's a museum dedicated to the history of German #emigration. Unfortunately it was closed already (we opted for the Klimahaus climate museum next door that day), so I could only take a photo from the outside and capture the neon writing inside. It's rather trippy with the #reflections, but I like it. 😊

A photograph taken from outside the German Emigration Center museum (Deutsches Auswandererhaus) in Bremerhaven, looking in through a large window. The reflections of a large, modern brick building with numerous windows and a rounded glass section as well as another building and flags are visible on the glass. Inside the museum, an exhibition is displayed behind the window, featuring white neon writing with the phrase "Over 7 million people departed from here to an unknown world" on it. The neon writing and the buildings are superimposed in the reflection. Bright orange and white light streaks, likely from a display inside the museum, and the text "A1: HEILIGENHAFEN" as well as "BERLIN" and "MÜNCHEN", amongst others, likely departure cities for German emigrants, are also part of the interior exhibition, appearing as a dynamic overlay on the static reflection of the external buildings. The image is a complex blend of interior exhibition elements and exterior reflections.

For , dig if you will a picture of Prince’s polyester shirt from the 1984-85 Purple Rain tour.

On display at the Met Museum’s fantastic exhibition “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” about the history and cultural impact of Black dandyism. Image of Prince on the museum placard (last photo) is by Phil Sandlin. Designer info in the alt text.

From the museum placard: “During the period of his 1984 album and film Purple Rain, ruffled Regency-style shirts and closely cut tailcoats became his signature — a New Romantic echo of early nineteenth-century dandyism and the peacock styles of 1960s London. This top, designed by Marie France, made by Louis Wells and Vaughn Terry Jelks, and worn by Prince during the Purple Rain tour, features pearl buttons and bejeweled ‘cuff links,’ touches that enhance the garment's exuberant dandyism.”

I find this image dreamlike: a figure at the Met Museum’s exhibition “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” with the protective glass reflecting other figures across the room. Which one is dreaming the others?

Artist info in the alt text.

A scene from the Metropolitan Museum’s exhibition “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” about the history and current expressions of Black dandyism. Closeup on a bald mannequin, from torso up, in a dark pinstriped jacket with a posy of colorful flowers pinned to the lapel (1). The display’s protective glass reflects an identical mannequin across the room, wearing a black coat with gold braid and fringed epaulettes over tracksuit pants (2). A third mannequin is somewhat visible reflected against the jacket of the first one. The reflection also shows a person perusing framed artworks on the far wall. The museum lighting dramatically picks out elements of color against mostly subdued darker tones.

Footnotes (info from the museum placards):
(1) Emerie Tchatchoua in collaboration with Olga Prinku, “Suit,” 2021: Jacket of navy pinstriped wool gabardine embroidered with bouquet of polychrome dried flowers; trousers of navy pinstriped wool gabardine

(2) Olivier Rousteing, “Ensemble,” 2023: Coat of black cotton velvet with fringed epaulets and Brandenburg closures of gold metallic braid with embroidered pearls and crystals; tracksuit of black, white, and gold polyester satin

The Great Hall of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, as seen from the second-floor balcony at the north end. A vast domed ceiling, with a central circular skylight ringed by lightbulbs, rests atop three massive arches. The middle arch leads into a second domed area with a similar arrangement of arches that in turn leads to a third. Each section of domes and arches recedes further from camera to create the impression of nested repeating geometric patterns. Beneath the side arches and the far middle arch are railed balconies overlooking the busy main floor, where people mill about the central information desk or the Egyptian statue at bottom frame. While the skylight is a luminous blue, the scene is predominantly in warm tones of tan and gold.

The image presents a panoramic view of a cityscape under a clear blue sky. In the foreground, there is a well-maintained garden with a variety of plants, including tall cacti and other succulents, arranged in a curved pattern along a stone wall. The garden is lush and green, with some yellow flowers adding a pop of color. Beyond the garden, the city unfolds with a mix of residential and commercial buildings, including several tall skyscrapers that form the city's skyline. The buildings are spread out across the landscape, with roads and green spaces interspersed among them. The overall scene is bright and sunny, with the city stretching out towards the horizon.

For me it's usually architectural elements, such as this one from a museum.

A low-angle, black and white shot of a rectangular opening framed by thick, light-colored walls, leading up to a ceiling composed of many square, translucent panels with a dark grid pattern. Below the ceiling, through the opening, a dark wall is visible, with a small, light-colored rectangular opening in it. A handrail is visible on the bottom right, suggesting a staircase leading to this opening in the foreground.

All of you taking photos: I wonder if you really see what's here or if you're so concerned with getting that perfect shot that you've forgotten this is a tragedy site, not a tourist attraction. As I continually had to move "out of someone's way" as they carefully tried to frame this place mourning. I kept wondering what makes us think we can capture the pain, the loss, the pride and the confusion - this complexity - into a 4 x 5 glossy. I love my city. Firegirl, NYC. 09/17/01

In the foreground, branches with pink flowers arch over the scene, creating a natural frame. The flowers are vibrant and contrast with the blue sky. The building is partially obscured by the branches, adding depth to the composition. The overall scene is bright and sunny, with no visible clouds.

The image features a modern architectural structure set against a clear blue sky. The building is predominantly white, with a combination of smooth and textured surfaces. The facade includes large glass windows, allowing for natural light to enter. The structure has a geometric design with clean lines and angular forms, including a prominent overhanging section. In the foreground, there is a stone wall with a rough texture, contrasting with the smoothness of the building. A tree with sparse branches is visible on the left side, adding a natural element to the scene. The overall composition highlights the interplay between the man-made structure and the natural environment.

The video showcases a decorative pillow featuring a black and white photograph of a steam engine's wheels. Initially, the pillow is displayed on a light-colored couch, with a textured white throw blanket partially visible in the foreground. The photograph on the pillow captures the intricate details of the wheels and the connecting rods, emphasizing the mechanical complexity of the steam engine.

As the video progresses, additional elements are introduced. Text appears in the upper left corner, reading "DOUGLAS E. WELCH DESIGN AND PHOTOGRAPHY," indicating the creator of the design. Circular insets are added to the right side of the pillow, showcasing the same photograph on different products: a phone case, a tote bag, and a rectangular item, possibly a wallet or a small bag. This suggests that the design is available on multiple items.

At the bottom of the frame, the text "Steam Engine Wheels" is displayed, followed by the website "DOUGLASEWELCH.COM/SHOP/791," providing a link for viewers to purchase the design. The video maintains a consistent focus on the pillow and the promotional elements, highlighting the versatility of the design across various products.

I was mesmerized by this bronze sculpture by Kehinde Wiley, BOUND, on a recent visit to the Brooklyn Museum.

Black and white photo of Kehinde Wiley’s bronze sculpture BOUND (2014), three busts of Black women whose hair rises and intertwines above their heads.

From the Brooklyn Museum’s description: “In Bound, the artist's first sculptural depiction of women, Kehinde Wiley constructs a tribute to Black femininity. Occupying the corners of the triangular base, the busts are nearly identical in their countenance—a steady, piercing gaze—as well as in their adornment and, perhaps, faith, given the crosses draped around their necks. They are further connected by their hair, which extends from each figure's head in a tightly braided updo that widens and loosens into an entwined flourish above their heads. Embellished with leaves, flowers, and birds, their crowns are given as much space and respect as the subjects themselves. Here, Wiley honors the beauty, function, and politics of hair in the lives of Black women.”

A closeup of Kehinde Wiley’s sculpture BOUND, focusing on the face of one of the bronze busts against a dark background. The Black woman’s face is in three-quarter view with her gaze directed towards the upper right frame. Her expression is somber, steely, confident, determined. Some intricate details of her hair are visible, as is part of a large hoop earring hanging from her unseen left ear.

This right here is why I got into the random-artefact-bot business in the first place. It’s like the cover of a mystery novel, it’s like a Cornell box, it’s like a Zen story about an artist who insists on leaving the last panel of a Japanese screen blank … it’s perfect.
