HB-IRN [Fake registration], Douglas DC-3, in Swiss Air colours, on display at the base of the observation mound in the middle of Munich Strauss, 30th September 1996.
This plane never actually served with Swiss Air - the real HB-IRN is on display at the Swiss Transport Museum (which, co-incidentally, I accidentally visited in 1990!) in Lucerne.
Instead, this spent most of it's career with SAS Scandinavian Airlines and Kar-Air, before being donated for display on the rooftop terraces at Frankfurt Airport, where, co-incidentally, I saw it in 1993!

A video I shot of a self-operating mortar-and-pestle, at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology in Hanoi.

River water is channeled into a hollowed-out log with a pestle attached at one end, resting in a mortar bowl. When the log fills up, it tips back to release the water into the river, and then — newly empty — falls back down, smashing the pestle into the bowl. An ingenious way to grind grain while you’re off doing other work in the fields.

Tivemos a oportunidade de fazer um tour privado do Museu do Vaticano bem cedo de manhã, por volta das 6h, onde acompanharíamos o guardião das chaves a abrir cada sala do museu e acender as luzes antes do público entrar.

São centenas de portas e interruptores, e nosso pequeno grupo pode, cada um, abrir (ou tentar abrir) as pesadas portas de ferro que fecham cada sala do museu. Foram 2h de percurso no escuro pelos corredores do museu, apenas com uma lanterna, e pouco a pouco íamos acendendo as luzes acompanhados do nascer do sol.

No final do passeio fomos na mítica Capela Sistina. Para quem já foi nesse lugar, sabe como as hordas de turistas tornam impossível visitar a capela de forma digna - não tem tempo para olhar nem apreciar nem entender.

Então poder passear pelos corredores do museu, entrar nas salas e visitar a Capela Sistina de manhãzinha, sem pessoas, foi um tanto especial.

A princípio é proibido tirar fotos da Capela Sistina por questões de propriedade intelectual (segundo o guardião das chaves, uma empresa japonesa que adquiriu os direitos das imagens?!) mas ele nos permitiu fotografar "em segredo", e nos pediu que fôssemos discretos. (como se não houvesse milhares de fotos dela internet afora!)

I just visited this exhibition in Brussels. I'm actually posting this while I'm still sitting in it. I had never heard of this guy before. He seemed to have had a happy life. It looks like it was easy to be him, but perhaps he wasn't so at ease. It must be hard to be a successful conceptual artist when the line between depth and scam is so fine. At least he didn't seem to have money issues. Some of the exhibited work was interesting, especially when he referred to the work of others. After some time, though, I felt more annoyed than inspired. But I guess that says more about me than the work.

The sculpture Close by Antony Gormley in the Hakone Open Air Museum at Kanagawa. Japan Antony Gormely began making works like this one in the 1980’s, works which were meant to be shown in the open, by transferring his own flesh into sculpture. He modeled this work on his own body, and forged the sculpture out of 1 tonne of 1500℃ liquid iron, at that temperature, hot as the magma at the core of the Earth. Gormely says that the human body is a part of the Earth; one unit of nature. By stripping away any features or personality and leaving behind only a representation of naked, universal existence, he teaches us that the universe and humankind are one.

It was one of those days when I was rushing between trains, but I decided to take the opportunity to spend some time in the museum. I remember seeing the photo exhibition 'Images d'Algérie' by Pierre Bourdieu. The photos were disposable, but the accompanying texts, some hand writen from his notebooks, were great archival pieces. A nice look back at my day studying social sciences. It was next to the "Bunker Archaeology" exhibition by Paul Virilio, which was a really great surprise — I really enjoyed this collection of bunkers from WWII that still stand on french coast.

Our family friend Sanshiro came from Tōkyō to hold a solo concert at The Museum of Kyōto (京都文化博物館), singing chanson and handling complex Debussy piano melodies. The red brick building, as I had suspected, was from the Meiji Era, built in 1906. I'm often surprised by what I discover in Kyōto, and Japanese people are reserved and humble, so you don't know who you might be dealing with. When six of us went for coffee after the performance, one of the elderly women pulled Sanshiro out to her temple, which turned out to have the famous six-sided Rokkaku-dō building, and her family has the Ikenobō (池坊) school of flower arrangement. More astonishingly, she was not only a former Cabinet member but also one of Japan's small Imperial family. She gave me the elegant calendar shown in the fourth photo.

#Tortola today, and we thought it was going to be more bearable but it's been excruciatingly hot and humid here. We've only sweated more in Vietnam.

A very slow walk brought us to the Old Government House #Museum. Wonderful place and staff, gorgeous gardens.

More slow walking later brought us to the Pusser's Pub for a fantastic rum cocktail, friendly staff, loads of naval memorabilia, and powerful air conditioning.

On the balcony drinking champagne now.

We're in one corner of a dining room in a colonial style house. The floors are dark wood, smooth enough to reflect light coming in from the windows on one wall opposite us. Gestern waren wir im Von der Heidt #Museum in #Wuppertal. Eine wirklich feine Sammlung dort. Insbesondere bei den dort ausgestellten Expressionist:innen waren einige Schätzeken dabei.

Besonders positiv aufgefallen ist mir der transparente Umgang mit der #Provenienz der Exponate: Fast an Jedem befand sich ein Hinweis hierauf in Textform und zusätzlich noch in einer leicht erkennbaren rot-orange-gelb-grün Ampel. Wirklich gut. Wir hatten einen tollen Tag dort. #kunst #malerei

A front, right-side view of Union Pacific #900081. This snowplow features a 12-foot diameter cutting wheel that would turn as fast as 150 revolutions per minute and could throw snow up to 300 feet away from the tracks. The cutting wheel was driven by a 16-cylinder 3,000-horsepower turbocharged diesel engine. It was not self-propelled and had to be pushed by at least three locomotives. This snowplow was last used in 1994 in Wyoming.

Because of its immense size and power, the #4006 and 24 sister unites were nicknamed "Big Boy". Building in 1941 by American Locomotive Company, it was used by Union Pacific to haul heavy freight trains through the Rocky Mountains from Cheyenne, Wyoming and Ogden, Utah. It 132-foot length, weighing 1.2 million pounds, could reach a top speed of 80 miles per hour and a maximum of 6,900 horsepower. Eight of the original locomotives are still in existence.

A working vintage voting machine from the Shirley Chisholm exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York. I felt a small thrill as I pulled the lever for Chisholm — the first Black woman to be elected to Congress and to run for president, in 1972 — and tried to imagine the alternate timeline where she won and took this country to a better place. We’re still trying to get there.

If you’ll permit, a photo of a photo. This image has stayed with me ever since I saw it in the Vietnamese Women’s Museum in Hanoi. I grew up with Western narratives of the war, and it was eye-opening to see stories from “the other side.” I find this moment striking — a depiction of joy in resistance, and of communal bonds forged in struggle. (No photo credit, but I’ll add the info if I find it.)

#fensterfreitag #windowfriday No, this isn't a romantic window of a holiday cottage, but the window of a prison cell in the "Gevangenpoort (prison gate)," a medieval prison in The Hague. Since 1882, the building has been a museum about the history of the building and the prison system. The cell shown here was for the wealthy and the nobility. For the common people, there were small, dark, windowless cells in the basement, sometimes holding as many as 15 men. But food there was free. If you had (payed for) such a beautiful cell with a window and a view, you had to have your own food brought to you. You could also bring your own furniture and servants! Today, all kinds of torture instruments are displayed in this room. Another #FensterFreitag today, because it's a rather messy one. The #window is from the #DeutschesAuswandererhaus (German Emigration Center) #museum in #Bremerhaven. It's a museum dedicated to the history of German #emigration. Unfortunately it was closed already (we opted for the Klimahaus climate museum next door that day), so I could only take a photo from the outside and capture the neon writing inside. It's rather trippy with the #reflections, but I like it. 😊

Was hier so munter vor sich hinrostet, war mal ein #Wassertank der Keiho Middle School in #Nagasaki / #Japan.
Unrühmlich bekannt geworden durch den Abwurf einer #Atombombe.
Der Tank stand etwa 800m vom Hypozentrum, dort wo die Bombe explodierte, entfernt und wurde durch diese deformiert.
Zu sehen im dortigen #Museum.
Sehr gut gemachte #Ausstellung über eins von zwei furchtbaren Ereignissen, die bitte nicht mehr passieren dürfen.

Today Nov 9 / 25 I visited the museum again and passed by that fantastic sculpture once more. The artist is Domien Van den Bossche, it’s called The Widow and was made in white marble in 1890.
